The number one player in the world is using an underdog mindset to fuel her push to the title.

To get to the final of the US Open this year, the top-ranked tennis player in the world adopted an underdog mentality.

Since April 4, the 21-year-old Polish sensation has been ranked No. 1 by the WTA, making her the odds-on favourite to win the title in Flushing Meadows in a little over five months.

Despite her prior success at Roland Garros and her reputation as a clay specialist, Swiatek had a rough run-up to the year's last Grand Slam tournament.

Her hardcourt season was marked by a pair of defeats in the quarterfinals at the hands of Beatriz Haddad Maia in Toronto and Madison Keys in Cincinnati.
