Meta removes Chinese election meddling

On Tuesday, Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram, said that it had found and removed what it called the "first focused Chinese operation to meddle in U.S. politics."

However, the Chinese campaign seemed narrow in scope, and at times amateurish, in comparison to the Russian efforts.

According to the company's study, the bogus messages first appeared on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter in November 2021.

Later, the users pretended to be conservative Americans, advocating gun rights and opposing abortion while voicing criticism of President Biden.

Two representatives from Meta said that they were unable to pin the blame for the campaign on a specific person or organisation.

The initiative stood out because it seemed to concentrate on polarising domestic issues just before the midterm elections.
