SWEEPING MEADOWS — Andy Murray lost against Matteo Berrettini and was eliminated from the US Open. He was visibly upset with his own performance.
For the first time since his two hip operations, Murray was attempting to get to the fourth round of a grand slam, but he kept effing and blinking behind the baseline
The last time he triumphed at this stage was in 2017 at Wimbledon when he defeated Fabio Fognini, but on this occasion,
the younger, taller Italian proved to be too much for him in a game of two serves—that Berrettini's worked and Murray's that didn't.
Murray will lick his wounds before departing for Glasgow to play in the Davis Cup, while Berrettini will now play Alejandro Davidovich Fokina for a spot in the quarterfinals.
With half the court drenched in strong sunshine and the other half in shadow, Murray's early slot against Arthur Ashe proved challenging for the second straight match.
