Late Sunday, tropical storm and storm surge watches were issued for sections of Florida's coast as Ian approached.
Ian was a tropical storm in the Caribbean Sea with 65 mph winds at 11 p.m. ET, but it "continues to strengthen" and is projected to become a hurricane Monday.
The storm is projected to become a hurricane Monday and a major hurricane Tuesday.
It could reach Florida's southwest and western shores Tuesday and Wednesday.
Late Sunday, a tropical storm watch was issued for Fort Myers and the nearby shore. Flood watches were also issued.
"Ian will be a strong and powerful storm in the eastern Gulf of Mexico," the National Hurricane Center's interim director stated Sunday.
