30 August (UPI) — Bianca Andreescu of Canada cited a clothing malfunction in her U.S. Open first-round match against France's Harmony Tan as evidence that a sponsor, Nike, was to blame.
Andreescu struck a couple balls with her racket early on in her 6-9, 3-6, 6-1 triumph on Monday in Flushing, New York,
and her skirt continued flapping in the wind. She made changes to her photographs in an effort to get around it.
She then went over to the chair umpire and asked for a change of clothes.
"Should I consider this as one of my changeovers? I mean, it's Nike's responsibility, not mine "Andreescu informed the referee. "This clothing is awful, and I have to go. This is terrible."
After changing into a new attire, Andreescu returned to the court and won with 21 winners and 17 unforced mistakes. In the one hour and 39 minute match, she scored 6 out of 9 break points.
