Newly installed "Gun Free Zone" signs welcome New York City residents and guests to the notorious Times Square in Manhattan.
One of the many new "sensitive" areas where weapons are prohibited is Times Square.
City authorities put up the posters on Wednesday in advance of a new state rule that restricts where weapons may be carried in public taking effect on Thursday.
The legislation was enacted in response to the Supreme Court's decision in June to overturn a statute governing gun ownership.
The measure was enacted by state legislators on July 1 with strong support for maintaining gun restrictions.
New court challenges are being brought against the rule, which takes effect on September 1. Critics claim it places too many limits on where individuals are allowed to carry weapons.
